At\u00a0<a class=\"es hg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.matsio.com\/matsio\/saasboomi\/build\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SaaSBoomi Build<\/a>, builders of great products and developers of sparkling tech had much to say.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c624\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In the hustle-filled early days of SaaS unicorn Postman, an office tour would end barely a minute after it began.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8741\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It was a one-bedroom apartment that Ankit Sobti, Abhijit Kane, and Abhinav Asthana had rented out and repurposed as their office. There, bookshelves doubled up as workstations, and one didn\u2019t need to \u201choller\u201d for a meeting\u2013a mere mumble would do.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5979\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It was in that cramped workplace that one of the fundamental discoveries that had an overarching impact on the journey of the start-up was made. The postman had been trying to simplify their microservices architecture around the turn of 2018, trying out a lot of technological solutions to the design problem. In this milieu, the founders moved to a larger apartment (office), and, to their utter disbelief, the architecture they were trying to redesign mirrored the change in the layout. \u201cIt was a fundamental eye-opener for us. When we moved from a single bedroom apartment to a four-bedroomed one, we could see how the code was evolving based on how we were interacting in the new office. Office layout and code decisions!\u201d Sobti exclaimed, the unfinished sentence expression of sheer incredulity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a196\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What Sobti and the other founders saw in action was the postulations of a\u00a0<a class=\"es hg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.melconway.com\/Home\/Committees_Paper.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong class=\"gk if\">research paper<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by computer scientist Mel Conway in\u00a0<em class=\"gj\">Datamation<\/em>\u00a0magazine well over five decades ago, that an organization would produce a system (defined broadly) whose structure is a copy of the organization\u2019s communication structure. Once aware of this, the founders wondered if the inverse was true: if they communicated differently, would the system they were building change commensurately? It did.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e132\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The realization that struck the team was further reinforced by the writings of software development guru Eric Evans and Throughtworks Chief Scientist Martin Fowler, a\u00a0<a class=\"es hg\" href=\"https:\/\/martinfowler.com\/aboutMe.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong class=\"gk if\">loud-mouthed pundit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on software, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/operations\/guide-to-hyperscaling-enterprise-software-startups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enterprise applications<\/a>. But all the glitz of\u00a0<a class=\"es hg\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/04\/blitzscaling\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong class=\"gk if\">blitzscaling<\/strong><\/a> aside, it would not work without a \u201cstrong foundation of values,\u201d said Sobti, narrating his way into the crux of the nine-speaker virtual event organised by the Pay-it-Forward SaaS community <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SaaSBoomi<\/a>. The SaaSBoomi Build was a series of talks to set entrepreneurs and leaders up for product-tech success.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c70b\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Invariably, most speakers eventually gravitated toward values and the importance of evolving culture codes quite early in the development of products and subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/growth\/zenotis-secret-sauce-for-expansion-and-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scale-up of business in the company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"d6ce\" class=\"in io da eh ip iq ir is it iu iv iw ix iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk dx\"><strong class=\"bf\">Inculcate product thinking right from the beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"0ad7\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl jl gn go gp jm gr gs gt jn gv gw gx jo gz ha hb jp hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">STS Prasad, Freshworks\u2019s Senior Vice-President of Engineering, has witnessed from close quarters its much-storied growth spurt over the past four years. Through such a steep trajectory, a start-up should not lose focus on its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/product\/understanding-product-led-growth-by-girish-mathrubootham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">product thinking<\/a>,\u201d advised Prasad. By that, he meant clarity over what a start-up wants to deliver to the <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/growth\/nailing-your-icp-to-supercharge-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identified market<\/a> and enabling engineers to develop the ability to think long-term: \u201cThey\u2019re not just thinking about \u2018What do I need to build this week or this month?\u2019 but are certainly able to think about the architecture, the overall technology investment that they need to make to keep themselves aligned with the product and business strategy of the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"9408\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It is also in the $1\u201310 m ARR phase that your engineering teams get pulled in different directions. Their time could get taken over by customer issues and bug fixing, making software development just another contender for their mindspace. As you scale up, what should the ideal size of your engineering team be? Prasad had some suggestions:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"hi hj hk hl hm hn ck cl paragraph-image\">\n<div class=\"ho hp hq hr aj hs\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">\n<div class=\"ck cl jq\">\n<div class=\"hy s hq hz\">\n<div class=\"jr ib s\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sr ss t u v hv aj c\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1200\/0*oH3s2cgfJcLrT-S-\" sizes=\"auto, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/207\/0*oH3s2cgfJcLrT-S- 276w, https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/414\/0*oH3s2cgfJcLrT-S- 552w, https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/480\/0*oH3s2cgfJcLrT-S- 640w, https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/525\/0*oH3s2cgfJcLrT-S- 700w\" alt=\"Image for post\" width=\"1600\" height=\"934\" \/ loading=\"lazy\" ><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"6cf0\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">One of the fundamental focus areas, also one of the trickiest in terms of execution, is <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/operations\/playbook-for-hiring-after-2m-arr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hiring<\/a>. Start-ups across the globe have evolved their own styles of recruitment; some have boldly experimented with unorthodox methods that have upended established notions about the ideal candidate. Prasad urged recruiters to hire candidates who are willing to push their own boundaries; it\u2019s an intangible, and sometimes elusive, trait, but, nevertheless, worth pursuing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">At the same time, never compromise on the basics: \u201cWe do sometimes tend to get carried away by educational background or which college the engineer went to, or which company the engineer had worked at, to keep track of, maybe, some specific expertise. But by and large, I would ask you to really focus on the eagerness of your engineers to be able to learn new technologies, learn new engineering skills, be flexible to take on whatever needs to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"1ac3\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Prasad underscored his suggestions with his own experience building out Freshrelease, an agile software project management product from the Freshworks stable. It was built by a team of 10 engineers, the majority of who had less than two years of work experience, and who do not belong to the Ivy League grad category:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"ge gf gg\">\n<p id=\"f120\" class=\"gh gi gj gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe were able to replace Jira [Atlassian\u2019s workflow management tool] with Freshrelease in a kind of an internal pilot. The key takeaway is that the things to look for in an engineer are eagerness to learn and hunger to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"1df2\" class=\"in io da eh ip iq ir is it iu iv iw ix iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk dx\"><strong class=\"bf\">Take your time defining your viable product<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"1986\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl jl gn go gp jm gr gs gt jn gv gw gx jo gz ha hb jp hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What Prasad came to know by experience <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/product\/building-products-that-sell-themselves-story-of-appointy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building products<\/a> are learnings that, not surprisingly, one can find codified in the hiring practices of some other start-ups, too. Speaking immediately after Prasad at the SaaSBoomi summit was Soham Mazumdar, co-founder at Rubrik. The 6-year-old Palo Alto-based company is into ensuring business continuity, solving problems related to data security, backup, disaster recovery and cybersecurity for its customers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"653f\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Rubrik\u2019s line of business demands a direct understanding of the customer. The selling is enterprise-grade, customer support is high-touch, and the average ticket size of sales is \u201cpretty high,\u201d in the words of Mazumdar.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"ge gf gg\">\n<p id=\"2ee5\" class=\"gh gi gj gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe are going after the replacement market, meaning there have been many products that cater to the same market. This is very much an established market.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"bb6b\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In such a highly competitive business, Mazumdar, too, emphasizes the importance of defining product utility down to the last word, making it crystal clear to founders themselves as to what it does for the targeted market. By doing that at Rubrik, it became clear to the founders whom they should go for during hiring drives: \u201cWe realized that our minimum viable product was as much about monitoring the system as it was about just the basic act of data protection. Once we were clear on that, we knew whom to hire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"be19\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Rubrik soon realized that effectively managing\/storing data was the key requirement. Mazumdar remembers that the founders all looked at each other after this realization dawned upon them, and came to the conclusion that they would have to make a key hire.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"ge gf gg\">\n<p id=\"dac4\" class=\"gh gi gj gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe all had strengths but this particular area was not the strength of any of us\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"a14e\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Once a start-up\u2019s founders have crystallized their product idea, the hiring of the first twenty engineers is crucial. Mazumdar suggests an even mix and warns against not hiring specialists and perfectionists, for some of them go on to become great technical leaders and code reviewers in the future. The design aimed at making lives easier for customers and users is essential to the success of any software company and its products. It isn\u2019t just about making products look great.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c456\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cTo design a chair, you need to understand how it will be used, whom it is meant for, where it will be kept,\u201d said Bharath Balasubramanian, senior director of design at Freshworks. \u201cDesign is all about creating something that your users will love to use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"f89f\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Bharath\u2019s post-lunch session was an instructional <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/design\/consumerization-of-b2b-saas-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journey into the design process<\/a> and its central role in building and scaling an enterprise start-up. He packed it with guidelines and dos and don\u2019ts that can make the difference between success and failure.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7bab\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Talking about website design, for example, Bharath emphasized the need <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/marketing\/creating-a-hook-with-messaging-and-website-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to convey the message in the first fold of the webpage<\/a> so visitors would explore further.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"ge gf gg\">\n<p id=\"29ef\" class=\"gh gi gj gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThe first step in a company\u2019s customer journey is the website. It is where most customers would first experience your brand. The website is your storefront. It needs to instil trust and draw in your customers. So build it with care.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"6ee8\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But how do you ensure effective design? According to Bharath, the solution lies in <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/product\/how-to-structure-engineering-product-org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talking to customers and understanding their needs<\/a> in the early stages of the design process. \u201cTry to deliver as much delight as possible with your features. Delight helps reduce churn,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e33a\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Now, design of the kind Bharath talks about cannot be an afterthought. It needs to be an integral part of a product company\u2019s DNA. Which also means a product startup needs a designer from Day 1. A designer who understands business problems and focuses on delivering solutions to fix those problems.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"ge gf gg\">\n<p id=\"3ecd\" class=\"gh gi gj gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cAs soon as you start the product definition, you need to have a designer,\u201d he said. \u201cYou cannot take shortcuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"b0b1\" class=\"in io da eh ip iq ir is it iu iv iw ix iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk dx\"><strong class=\"bf\">Facing the headwinds in enterprise SaaS on the public cloud<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"8824\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl jl gn go gp jm gr gs gt jn gv gw gx jo gz ha hb jp hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The differences between on-premise software and software-as-a-service provided over the public cloud can be categorized under three primary buckets \u2014 scale, cost, and security, explained Milind Borate, setting the stage for his session.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d60a\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The SaaS model allows optimizing for economies of scale. But because of multiple cost factors, gross margins tend to be smaller than for on-premise software, said Milind, co-founder and CTO at backup-as-a-service provider Druva. \u201cGross margin still needs to be above 70%,\u201d he said, delving into the intricacies of building enterprise SaaS on the public cloud.<\/p>\n<p id=\"96db\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Security, he added, is a challenge because enterprise customers are finicky about it and demand certifications that validate the robustness of the SaaS solution. \u201cThird-party security audits and certifications are a minimum requirement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5773\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">On the architecture for public SaaS, compute, storage, and network are the key parameters, said Milind. He emphasized on systems being resilient enough to handle varying loads, efficient use of resources, and capacity planning \u2014 all of which also help optimize costs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"af25\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As for storage, Milind suggested that, depending on the scale of operations, companies could begin with a relational database and switch to a distributed database later. \u201cYou will go through multiple cycles as the software evolves and you get more customers. The objective is driven by your goal, but both of these can keep changing. Purpose gives the \u2018what\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019, not \u2018when\u2019, because that too can change,\u201d Deepak said. \u201cOnce you align with the purpose, even if you need to change direction, your product, UX and engineering teams will understand why that decision was made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"e4fc\" class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Purpose needs to be accompanied by a high-level operating framework for your teams to work with. The framework is important for teams to align with the company\u2019s growth plans. \u201cWhen you are inching toward $4 million or $5 million ARR, you begin to get some sort of rhythm and at that point of time you need to have a framework,\u201d Deepak said, adding that it\u2019s okay to have a framework for six months or a year so long as it gives you a broad alignment for operating readiness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gh gi da gk b gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf cs dx\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">For the third ingredient, catalyst, Deepak employed the analogy of a credit card \u2014 you need to have it but you must figure out when and where it should be used. \u201cThe catalyst can take different forms and shapes.
