We were discussing about <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/marketing\/playbook-on-how-to-build-a-startup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how start-ups evolve<\/a>, and eventually the conversation came to :<br \/>\nWhy does Atlassian say they <em class=\"hr\">\u201cunleash the potential of every team\u201d,<\/em><br \/>\nor AirBnB say <em class=\"hr\">\u201cwe help create a world where you can belong anywhere\u201d<\/em>?<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not like they were born with that being at the core of their idea?<\/p>\n<p id=\"6d14\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Of course, we\u00a0<em class=\"hr\">HAD TO<\/em>\u00a0then reminisce briefly about this episode from Silicon Valley:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Silicon Valley - Making the World a Better Place\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B8C5sjjhsso?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<article>\n<div>\n<section class=\"cs ct cu cv cw\">\n<div class=\"n p\">\n<div class=\"ab ac ae af ag dl ai aj\">\n<p id=\"61a5\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"gu hy\">Sudarsan was curious. Why do companies that start off solving specific problems end up aggrandising their purpose?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"38d8\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To me it seemed natural. I always needed a \u201cgrand mission\u201d or a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) to motivate me and make me proud of my work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a956\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This may be straightforward for some, but I realise there are many who look at this and have some questions :<\/p>\n<p class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201c<em class=\"hr\">But why do they care to do this?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy backward fit a new mission for the company when it wasn\u2019t this when you started building all this? Who are you fooling?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em class=\"hr\">\u201cAnd why do many start-ups do this so early? Before they\u2019ve even gotten to somewhere!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"081d\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Well, it actually isn\u2019t about saying we\u2019re here to save the world. It\u2019s mostly about 2 things.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cab1\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\"><strong class=\"gu hy\">1. Giving them a larger purpose helps team members find motivation and meaning in their work.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Back in 2017, I had the opportunity to work with Girish (<a class=\"hz az gc\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/9f322b8ce03e?source=post_page-----5fe0521d6331--------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girish Mathrubootham<\/a>) and Satya (<a class=\"hz az gc\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/499df9b43688?source=post_page-----5fe0521d6331--------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">satya padmanabham<\/a>) on what would be a revised \u201cvision\u201d and \u201cmission\u201d for Freshworks \u2014 when we were over 1500 people. It was necessary, as we\u2019d been acing all our \u201cdreams\u201d and \u201cgoals\u201d as a company, and didn\u2019t want our teams to rest on our laurels. We wanted everyone to look for our next big challenge, to grow and learn together.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bb88\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Eventually, Girish came up with \u201cwe exist to help businesses wow their customers, and create customers for life\u201d. If your existence is making other businesses more successful in delighting their customers and keeping them for life, that makes you proud! That makes you find that purpose from your work, and can change your attitude towards it \u2014 since you now know how you make a difference to your customers\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4d4a\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\"><strong class=\"gu hy\">2. It helps your growing company align.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"0bc4\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">For you to grow and succeed, you need everyone on your team rowing in the same direction, and it\u2019s hard to ensure that\u2019s happening when you have over 1000 employees! The mission helps, to a great extent, to ensure you have a frame of reference to what that direction is.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f583\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I have a good example to illustrate the second one from personal experience. And why it may help to think about this early, not only after you scale.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1a74\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When we built our last start-up, we were just 3 good friends working together on an idea. We had known each other for over a decade already, and we had great rapport and understanding.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ff1a\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Yet, when our initial voice messaging app (Phonon) did not have the growth we expected, we discovered something surprising.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f9a6\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">While we had great alignment on the initial app and it\u2019s features, we had no alignment on what our next experiments would be to get to <a href=\"https:\/\/saasboomi.org\/saas\/product\/how-product-market-fit-changes-between-india-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">product market fit<\/a>. I was looking at the product from the lens of it being a \u201cutility\u201d for communication \u2014 and hence wanted to see if we can make a version of our app for businesses. Vignesh looked at it as an engagement product, and wanted to create \u201crooms\u201d for voice-based banter around recent sporting events, etc. Deepak looked at it as a social tool with friends at the centre of it, and suggested we make an app (called \u201cTen\u201d) for you to stay in constant touch with just your ten best friends \u2014 everyone being one tap away on your screen.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6c0f\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">While we initially shipped a good quality product that many of our friends loved, we didn\u2019t have a common notion of what kind of product it was \u2014 utility, entertainment, or social.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bf45\" class=\"gs gt do gu b gv gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp cs el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Need I say more? If three friends for over a decade can have different ideas that could pull us in different directions, imagine what can happen when you have 500 people. You need to define who you are as a business, at a slightly higher plane (than just how your business makes money today), as early in the journey as you can.
